Mom’s Night Out
I never wanted to do painting parties. I work all day teaching kids how to create art, why would I want to make art with adults when I wasn’t working? A close friend of mine does a moms night once a month with other moms in the first grade. I thought why not? I couldn’t have been more wrong.
These Catholic School moms knew how to have a good time. Everyone brought a snack and a bottle to share. Two of the ladies chose the painting that we were going to do. My sister in law Stacey who is also a member of that church was my helper for the evening. Stacey is a great organizer, very creative, and such a big help for me. I loved everyone’s enthusiasm when we were doing it. I love how everyone’s art turned out completely different. It was a really cool exper ience painting with adults rather than with my students or by myself.
You can really start to see the personality of people as you start to paint with them. Even though, I didn’t know the ladies before the class, I had an idea of who they were by how they painted. To the point where I thought, man I wish I would have gone back to school for my art therapy degree. I love to meet people and see who they are through how they work and their end product.
You have the ladies that want to follow directions precisely. They want a step by step instruction. They tend to be the rule followers. You have those
ladies that want constant help. They want reassurance that they are doing okay. They tend to be my cautious ones. Some ladies that just gave up, usually because they are such perfectionist, the art isn’t going the way they wanted, so it is time to move onto something else. Then there are ladies that just did their own thing and the painting ended up however it ended up. Those are the free spirits. It is what it is and they are going to have fun doing it.
This party made me realize how much I enjoy teaching art no matter who the audience and what the subject matter is. I really enjoyed it and I hope they did too.
